In Sunday’s (3/27) Plain Dealer (Cleveland), Zachary Lewis discusses details of the Cleveland Orchestra’s recently announced 2011-12 season. “Bold new initiatives may not be in the works, but over the course of the season, the orchestra will undertake two major tours, continue its residency in Miami, present another complete opera, celebrate the music of Brahms and return to Carnegie Hall in New York. Moreover, 2011-12 marks the 10th season under music director Franz Welser-Most. … Beyond its annual three-week residency in Miami, details of which are due later, the orchestra will embark on a fall tour of Europe and a springtime journey along the U.S. West Coast. The European trip begins in late October with two concerts in Madrid, Spain, where the orchestra last traveled in 1999, and continues into November with performances in Valencia, Spain; Paris; Luxembourg; and Vienna and Linz, Austria. The group is also considering a stop in Cologne, Germany. … The season kicks off [September 29] with Welser-Most conducting Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 and two lesser-known works by Stravinsky. … Also notable on the list of [guest] conductors is the debut of Marin Alsop, music director of the Baltimore Symphony.”
