JOHN MANGUM has been appointed director of artistic planning at the San Francisco Symphony, effective June 27, 2011. Mangum has served as artistic administrator of the New York Philharmonic since 2009; he previously was vice president for artistic planning at The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and artistic administrator of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, where he also served as that orchestra’s program annotator. In his new San Francisco post, Mangum will oversee programming for the orchestra’s 34-week subscription season, festivals, tours, recording projects, world premiere and commissioning programs, as well as provide artistic direction for all the orchestra’s concerts and presentations. A California native, Mangum holds a Ph.D. in history and musicology from the University of California, Los Angeles.
