New England Conservatory in Boston has announced the ten members of its third class of Abreu Fellows, which trains musicians to create El Sistema-inspired music education programs in the U.S. The musicians, who will begin the one-year postgraduate certificate program at NEC in August 2011, are Aisha Bowden, Julie Davis, David France, Ben Fuller, José Luis Hernández-Estrada, Stephanie Lin Hsu, Jennifer Kessler, Alysia Lee, Avi Mehta, and Albert Oppenheimer. Training for the fellows will include residencies in several American cities as well as in Venezuela, where the El Sistema program was founded in 1976 by José Antonio Abreu. The Abreu Fellows Program, an official program of NEC’s Preparatory and Continuing Education Schools, is run by NEC Education Director Erik Holmgren and Managing Director of El Sistema USA Stephanie Scherpf.
