In Tuesday’s (4/19) Sacramento Bee (California), Edward Ortiz writes, “When the Sacramento Philharmonic presents pianist Olga Kern performing Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 this October, it will mark the start of the orchestra’s 15th season. The 2011-12 season will see the company presenting four concerts. … The season will also likely see a partnership forged between the orchestra and the Sacramento Opera, which have long shared instrumentalists. The collaborative production—if it happens—would mark the first show from the financially strapped Sacramento Opera since it canceled most its 2010-11 season. … The season closes March 31 and April 1 with guest conductor Loris Tjeknavorian leading the orchestra in the U.S. premiere of his ‘Ararat Suite.’ The 73-year-old Tjeknavorian, born in Iran and of Armenian descent, has forged a noted career conducting and recording with some of the world’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. That concert will include the orchestra’s debut performance of Christopher Theofanidis’ ‘Rainbow Body’ and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 (‘Pathetique’). In the lead-up to that concert, the orchestra will celebrate and reach out to the Armenian and Greek community in the region, [the orchestra’s executive director Marc] Feldman said.”
