In Wednesday’s (4/27) San Jose Mercury News (California), Sue Gilmore writes, “ ‘The Desdemona project’—a collaboration between theater genius Peter Sellars, literary giant Toni Morrison and Malian singer/composer Rokia Traore … will make its U.S. premiere Oct. 26-29 in Berkeley’s Zellerbach Playhouse as part of the 2011-12 season announced by Cal Performances on Tuesday. That highly charged theatrical venture, co-commissioned by Cal Performances, is but one of several edgy productions in the new season—director Matias Tarnopolsky’s second for the UC Berkeley-based performing arts organization.” Tarnopolsky was formerly artistic administrator at the New York Philharmonic. “Opening on Sept. 16-17 in Zellerbach Hall with a revival of Mark Morris Dance Group’s 1986 ‘Dido and Aeneas,’ with the choreographer himself conducting the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, the 2011-12 season comprises some 63 events in 10 performance disciplines spread over the ensuing nine months. … The San Francisco Symphony, which used to play in Berkeley at the Greek Theatre on a regular basis, carries its 100th birthday party back into town for an all-Baroque concert with conductor Jane Glover on May 1, and music director Nicola Luisotti will bring his San Francisco Opera musicians to Zellerbach for all-orchestral programs in October and June of 2012.”
