The Philadelphia Orchestra has appointed CRISTIAN MACELARU assistant conductor, effective with the 2011-12 season. The appointment is for a two-year term and will include conducting special non-subscription concerts and serving as cover conductor. A native of Romania, Macelaru goes to the orchestra from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University (Houston, Tex.), where he is a member of the conducting staff. He recently completed his master’s degree in conducting from Rice, and has received further conducting training at Tanglewood Music Center, Aspen Music Festival and School, and as assistant conductor of the Dallas Opera.
