The Akron Symphony Orchestra in Ohio has announced that it will hold its first annual summer music camp for middle- and high-school musicians this year, from July 17 to 22 at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The camp, which is being offered in partnership with the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center, will include large- and small-group rehearsals, workshops, and recreational and environmental educational activities such as hiking, swimming, and team games. To attend the camp, applicants must have prior music experience and submit a letter of reference from a private instructor or ensemble director. Faculty at the camp comprise professional musicians from the Akron Symphony Orchestra and the Greater Akron area; conductor Eric Benjamin will act as the camp’s music director, and Akron Symphony Orchestra violinist Cory Smith will serve as camp director.
