Ten teenage composers from the Seattle area will have their works premiered tonight (5/10) by the Seattle Symphony at Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall. The composers—Wolfgang Beck, Benjamin Davis, David Dryfoos, Cole Holland, Lennart Jansson, David Lien, Brendan McMullen, Benjamin Salman, Akshay Srivatsan, and Christina Sun—participated in a twelve-week workshop led by Seattle Symphony Composer in Residence Samuel Jones. Local conductor Julia Tai will lead several of the compositions, and Jones will host the event, interviewing each composer prior to the performance of his or her work. Participants in the 2011 Merriman Family Young Composers Workshop were selected based on submitted scores. The annual workshop began in 1992 under Music Director Gerard Schwarz and former Composer in Residence Bright Sheng.
