The Lubbock (Tex.) Symphony Orchestra has announced the appointment of DAVID IN-JAE CHO to succeed TOMASZ GOLKA as music director, effective July 1, 2012. In August of this year Cho concludes his five-year tenure as associate conductor of Utah Symphony│Utah Opera, and he was recently named associate conductor at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music in Houston. From 2004 to 2007 he served as resident conductor of the San Antonio Symphony. He has guest conducted such organizations as the Grand Teton Music Festival and the orchestras of Seattle, Minnesota, Atlanta, Houston, Memphis, and Baton Rouge. In 2002 he was named to a one-year conducting fellowship at the New World Symphony, and the following year was a Karajan Fellow at the Salzburg Festival. Cho holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance from the Oberlin Conservatory and Peabody Institute, respectively. He obtained a master’s in conducting from the Shepherd School and furthered his conducting studies under the tutelage of Leonard Slatkin at the National Conducting Institute and as a fellow at Tanglewood Music Center.
