Tune Up Philly, the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra’s free afterschool classical music education program in Southwest Philadelphia, has received funding to continue the program for a second school year in 2011-12. Tune Up Philly is one of several recipients of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge Philadelphia initiative, which awarded the program $150,000. Carole Haas Gravagno, a PYO board member, will match the donation from the Knight Foundation. Tune Up Philly’s inaugural year was in 2010-11; it includes afterschool instruction for 80 elementary school students, five days a week, with concentrations in woodwind, brass, strings, and percussion instruments, plus choral and general music education.  For more information on Knight Arts Challenge Philadelphia, visit For more information on Tune Up Philly, visit
