Tune Up Philly, the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra’s free afterschool classical music education program in Southwest Philadelphia, has received funding to continue the program for a second school year in 2011-12. Tune Up Philly is one of several recipients of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge Philadelphia initiative, which awarded the program $150,000. Carole Haas Gravagno, a PYO board member, will match the donation from the Knight Foundation. Tune Up Philly’s inaugural year was in 2010-11; it includes afterschool instruction for 80 elementary school students, five days a week, with concentrations in woodwind, brass, strings, and percussion instruments, plus choral and general music education.  For more information on Knight Arts Challenge Philadelphia, visit http://www.knightarts.org/knight-arts-challenge/philadelphia.
