Astral Artists has announced that it will present Spiritual Voyages, a one-day, three-concert festival during which composers and poets will explore their African-American, Asian-American, and Latin-American cultures. During the festival, on February 18, 2012, musicians from the Astral roster will perform works by Gabriela Lena Frank, Vivian Fung, Osvaldo Golijov, Astor Piazzolla, David Sanford, Evelyn Simpson-Curenton, Alvin Singleton, and Heitor Villa-Lobos; among the poets to be represented are Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, and Sonia Sanchez. Funding for the festival comes from a $35,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to help create new audiences for classical music. Astral Artists is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization that provides career-bridging services for graduates of music conservatories.
