The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra in West Virginia has won $25,000 in Chase Community Giving’s contest for nonprofits being conducted on Facebook from April 21 to May 25. The WSO received 2,101 votes, making it one of 25 charities to receive the most votes in Round 1 of the contest. The advisory board for the contest will select five charities from Round 2 to present their ideas to the board, which will choose one favorite and donate $200,000 to that charity, plus an additional $300,000 in grants to be distributed among any of the five charities. The Wheeling Symphony plans to use the contest money to establish a performing-arts series at the historic Capitol Theatre to attract audiences to Wheeling’s struggling downtown area. The Chase contest is designed for 501(c)(3) charities with annual operating budgets between $1 million and $10 million.
