A report in Tuesday’s (6/14) Puget Sound Business Times (Washington) states, “The city of Seattle will rename a block of University Street adjacent to Benaroya Hall after retiring Seattle Symphony Conductor Gerard Schwarz. In a move similar to the Seattle Mariners’ naming of streets next to Safeco Field after Mariner legends such as Edgar Martinez, the block of University between Second and Third avenues will be given the honorary name, ‘Gerard Schwarz Place,’ with street signs being unveiled by city officials on Thursday. ‘The Seattle Symphony and Benaroya Hall are integral components of our community. Maestro Schwarz’s inspired guidance and talents have enriched the City, subscribers to the Symphony, and inspired students,’ said Seattle City Councilmember Tom Rasmussen, in a statement. Schwarz was named the 2009 First Citizen, an award bestowed by the Seattle-King County Association of Realtors that recognizes outstanding contributions to the Seattle community.” Schwarz leads his final concerts as the orchestra’s music director June 16 and 18 before stepping down after 26 years.
