The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in Canada has announced that construction is complete on the VSO School of Music http://www.vsoschoolofmusic.ca, located next to the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Vancouver. The new community music school will open to the general public on August 2 and music lessons will begin on September 6. The school, headed by executive director Shaun Taylor, will offer private lessons on all orchestral instruments, as well as piano, voice, classical guitar, and world instruments including koto, bodhran, fiddle, sitar, and tabla. Of the 49 faculty members contracted so far to teach at the school, 32 come from the VSO. The 25,000-square-foot facility includes a recital hall, six practice rooms, eleven computer listening stations, 18 teaching studios, two classrooms, and a two-story-high ensemble room. The facility also will provide education through the use of distance-learning technology to secondary schools in rural parts of British Columbia.
