EDWARD CUMMING has been named director of orchestral activities and associate professor of music at the Hartt School of the University of Hartford in Connecticut. During the 2010-11 academic year he served as the school’s interim director of orchestral activities while simultaneously concluding his nine-year tenure as music director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. In his new position Cumming will oversee The Hartt’s School’s orchestral activities, conduct the Hartt Symphony Orchestra, and teach conducting, score reading, and related courses. Prior to his Hartford Symphony post he was resident conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra. Cumming had earlier served as resident conductor of the Florida Orchestra and  assistant professor of music at the University of South Florida. He holds a doctorate in music from Yale University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley.
