In Thursday’s (6/23) Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Mary Thomas writes, “The Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra has announced the appointment of Daniel Meyer as Artistic Director. He succeeds Kypros Markou who retired in 2009 after 30 years with the symphony. Mr. Meyer is Music Director of the Asheville Symphony Orchestra, N.C., and of the Erie Philharmonic. Leaders of both those organizations are on record crediting Mr. Meyer with reinvigorating each through innovative programming and audience development. He has also been a champion of developing youth audiences and of contemporary composers. The first concert Mr. Meyer will lead under his new title will be the annual free summer event at the Robertshaw Amphitheatre, St. Clair Park, Greensburg. It will begin at 7 p.m. July 2 and the program will include light classics, patriotic music and summer marches. … The symphony conducted a two-year, nationwide search for a replacement for Mr. Markou, which attracted 159 applicants. … Mr. Meyer has served as Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony. In those capacities, he worked closely with Mariss Jansons, Manfred Honeck, Sir Andrew Davis and Charles Dutoit; led the symphony on tour; and conducted performances with Pinchas Zukerman, Sarah Chang and Marvin Hamlisch.”
