For its 2010-11 podcast series On the Music, the New York Philharmonic has won the 2011 Gold World Medal for Best Podcast in the Fine Arts Category from the New York Festivals for Radio Programming Awards. The Philharmonic’s podcast series—hosted by broadcaster and producer Elliott Forrest and WFMT Radio Network producer Mark Travis—offers concert previews that include interviews with artists and musical experts, plus illustrative musical examples. Podcasts this season have included conversations with Music Director Alan Gilbert about the orchestra’s performances of Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen this month; in-depth discussions with violinist and artist-in-residence Anne-Sophie Mutter and guest conductors Esa-Pekka Salonen and Paavo Järvi; and commentary from James M. Keller, the Philharmonic’s program annotator. New York Festivals has recognized top radio programs from around the world with awards given for the past 54 years, with industry professionals from 25 countries judging nominations. The Philharmonic won a bronze award in the Fine Arts category in 2010, and a silver medal for best podcast in all categories in 2009.
