From now through August 30, the San Francisco Symphony’s radio series “13 Days When Music Changed Forever” is airing on Tuesday evenings on New York station WQXR; programs also are streaming live at WQXR’s website and at the Public Radio Exchange website. The series, part of the orchestra’s “Keeping Score” music education project, consists of thirteen one-hour episodes exploring composers and musical works that changed the way people think about music. The series includes episodes devoted to the premieres of Mozart’s Don Giovanni in Prague (1787); Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring (1913); Terry Riley’s In C (1964); Charles Ives’s Three Places in New England (1931); and the first Ring cycle at Bayreuth (1876). Episodes intersperse musical excerpts with commentary from series host Suzanne Vega, San Francisco Symphony Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas, composers, musicologists, writers, and musicians.
