An obituary in Monday’s (7/11) Herald Tribune (Sarasota, Florida) states, “Frank William Milburn Jr., 84, formerly of New York City and Connecticut, passed away July 2, 2011. … A graduate of the University of Montana with a degree in journalism and of the Salzburg Mozarteum with degrees in piano and music history, Frank came to the New York Philharmonic in 1959. As music administrator he held this first such-titled position for 26 years—a post created for him by Leonard Bernstein and Carlos Moseley—after joining the Philharmonic’s Press Department. He was director of press for 17 years, and in both posts worked with and was a trusted advisor to Mr. Bernstein, George Szell, Pierre Boulez and Zubin Mehta. Frank was known for his unique and detailed knowledge. Quote from the book Zubin Mehta, The Score of My Life: ‘ …Frank Milburn was my right-hand man and my musical consciousness when it came to programming; he is an invaluable walking encyclopedia of music and a wonderful friend. …’ Frank retired from the Philharmonic in 1992. After moving to Sarasota in l998, Frank served as a director of the Sarasota Concert Association and as a director of Highland Park Condominium Association.”
