Pianist and conductor JOHN DALE SMITH has announced his decision to step down as director of the Lansing (Mich.) Symphony Big Band, a position he created and has filled for the past decade. Smith is director of music at Lansing’s Plymouth Congregational Church, a producer of local musicals and other events, leader of the John Dale Quintet, and co-leader of J&J Sounds. The Lansing Symphony Big Band, which includes musicians from throughout Michigan as well as members of the LSO, debuted in 2001 and is dedicated to the performance of music by such composers as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Cole Porter, and George Gershwin. A committee will be formed by the LSO to identify Smith’s successor.
