Pop sensations touring with an orchestra is no new phenomenon. Sting did an orchestra tour just last year. But for his current Symphonicity tour in Europe the legendary Police vocalist decided to use local orchestras in each city on the tour. What does it take to lead a rock star’s backup band? SymphonyNOW hears from Chelsea Tipton, whose job it is to stay one step ahead of Sting, preparing multiple orchestras for the performances.

The new issue of SymphonyNOW also hears from Cleveland Orchestra musicians, engaged in a run of Bruckner and John Adams programs at Lincoln Center July 13-17, about the ensemble’s various residencies around the country, and the importance of engaging diverse audiences.

SymphonyNOW is the League’s new, online-only publication that provides timely stories about orchestras on a weekly basis. You’ll find SymphonyNOW on the right-hand side of the Hub homepage.
