CASE SCAGLIONE and JOSHUA WEILERSTEIN have been named assistant conductors at the New York Philharmonic for the 2011-12 season. They will assist Music Director Alan Gilbert and all of the Philharmonic’s guest conductors throughout the season, and will lead educational events including School Day Concerts and Young People’s Concerts. Scaglione, 28, was named 2011 Solti Fellow by the Solti Foundation U.S. He recently concluded his tenure as music director of the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra in Los Angeles. He has served as assistant and cover conductor with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, has assisted at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Baltimore Opera, and has guest conducted the Cleveland Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. A native of Texas, Scaglione holds a bachelor’s degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, and pursued conducting studies at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University and the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen Music Festival and School.

Weilerstein, 23, was awarded First Prize and the Audience Prize in 2009 at Denmark’s Malko International Competition for Young Conductors. He has guest conducted several major Scandinavian orchestras as well as the Houston Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Venezuela’s Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra. Weilerstein was awarded the Robert J. Harth Conductor Prize as a Fellow and Aspen’s American Academy of Conducting, and subsequently won the Aspen Conducting Prize. He is an alumnus of New England Conservatory, where he received a bachelor’s degree in violin performance and dual master’s degrees in violin and orchestral conducting.
