The film A Surprise in Texas: The Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition has received a 2011 ECHO Klassik Award in the category of Music DVD Recording of the Year (Documentation). The prize goes to conductor James Conlon and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, featured in a backstage look at the 2009 Van Cliburn competition whose winners were pianists Haochen Zhang, Nobuyuki Tsujii, and Yeol Eum Son. The ECHO prize will be awarded on October 2 to Conlon and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra at the Konzerthaus Berlin. The ECHO Klassik Awards are presently annually by the German Phono Akademie, the cultural institute of the German music industry association.
