In Thursday’s (8/18) Daily Herald (Elgin, Illinois), Tara García Mathewson reports, “The Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra will welcome a new conductor to its ranks for the 2011-2012 season. Andy Masters, of North Aurora, will start as the conductor of the Prelude Orchestra, working with string musicians primarily in grades four through 12. Masters, who also serves as the orchestra director for Bell-Graham and Wasco schools in St. Charles Community Unit School District 303, said he has been itching to work with the EYSO for years. ‘My biggest goal right now is to really enjoy making music and help the students get to know themselves through the music,’ Masters said. ‘Exploring different stories and different avenues with the music is going to help them get to know themselves.’ That passion fits right in with theme for this year’s season, Arts and Minds, which features music that explores the connection between art and life. … Randal Swiggum, EYSO artistic director, said the organization is thrilled to welcome Masters to the team. … The season will officially kick off Aug. 26 when orchestra members hold their first rehearsal.”
