Wednesday (8/24) on the Texas news site DFW.com, Olin Chism writes, “For some years now, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra has opened its musical season with a large-scale festival in August, generally devoted to one composer. This year, though, is different. On Tuesday night in the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, the scale was small, not large, as the orchestra kicked off a new musical year. Specifically, the new Wyeth String Quartet, composed of principal players from the orchestra, presented a chamber music concert as a sort of prelude to bigger things to come later in the week. The four, supplemented by one guest, stuck to this year’s festival theme, ‘Celebrate America,’ playing music by American composers, as the full orchestra will be doing this weekend at Bass Hall. There was no printed program Tuesday night, and the players were not introduced individually. For the record, they were Michael Shih, first violin; Adriana DeCosta, second violin; Laura Bruton, viola; and Karen Basrak, cello. Principal flutist Jan Crisanti joined for one number. They played music by two very well-known composers, Samuel Barber and Philip Glass, and one who used to be very well-known, though no longer: Arthur William Foote.”
