The Lubbock (Tex.) Symphony Orchestra has announced the appointment of DAVID IN-JAE CHO to succeed TOMASZ GOLKA as music director, effective July 1, 2012. Cho first led the orchestra in March 2007 and was invited to return in 2009 for a Masterworks concert and a Family Concert. Now concluding a five-year tenure as associate conductor of Utah Symphony │Utah Opera, he was recently named associate conductor at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music in Houston. Cho served as resident conductor of the San Antonio Symphony from 2004 to 2007, and was awarded first prize at the Eduardo Mata International Conducting Competition in 2007.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Oberlin Conservatory, a master’s in piano performance from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, and a master’s in conducting from the Shepherd School. Cho furthered his training at the National Conducting Institute in Washington, D.C., and through conducting fellowships at the New World Symphony, the Salzburg Festival, and Tanglewood Music Center.
