Ludovic Morlot, Seattle Symphony’s incoming music director, will join members of the orchestra on September 4 for their first appearance at Bumbershoot: Seattle’s Music and Arts Festival. Morlot will introduce each piece on the informal “Symphony Untuxed” program, which includes Tom Johnson’s Failing: A Very Difficult Piece for Solo String Bass, during which bassist Joseph Kaufman carries on a conversation with the audience while performing, and a new work for electric bassoon written and performed by Seattle Symphony Principal Bassoon Seth Krimsky. For Vivaldi’s Double Violin Concerto in A minor, violinists Elisa Barston and Artur Girsky will serve as soloists and Morlot will play violin with the ensemble. Seattle’s annual Bumbershoot festival, established in 1971, takes place over Labor Day weekend and includes live music, comedy, theater, dance, film, urban crafts, and literary and visual arts at the 20 indoor and outdoor venues in the Seattle Center. Morlot is now embarking on his inaugural season as Seattle Symphony’s music director; in September 2012 he will assume a second post as chief conductor of Belgium’s Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie.
