Monday (9/26) on the Florida Times-Union online (Jacksonville), Charlie Patton writes, “By the time the Jacoby Symphony Hall opened in February 1997, Anthony Anurca was in his third season with the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra. In the spring of 1999, as he prepared to graduate from Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, Anurca was one of three young soloists who performed with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra in the annual Major/Minor Concert. He played as a substitute with the symphony from 2007 to 2009, then spent last year playing on a one-year contract. So he’s played in the Jacoby [Symphony Hall] many times. But when Anurca, 30, took the stage of the Jacoby last Friday to play the bassoon and contra bassoon in an evening of American music, it marked two significant firsts. It was Anurca’s first performance as a full-time core member of the symphony. And it marked the first time a former member of the Youth Orchestra played as a full-fledged core member of the symphony.” Anurca attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and played with the New World Symphony in Miami Beach before coming back to Jacksonville. He also held a one-year position with the Kansas City Symphony during the 2009-10 season.
