The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has announced that violinist ARNOLD BROSTOFF and trombonist JAMES GILBERTSEN have retired from the orchestra after 47 and 43 years, respectively. Brostoff joined the CSO violin section in 1964, having been appointed by then-music director Jean Martinon. A native of Chicago, he had previously played with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Boston Pops, the Seventh Army Symphony, and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Gilbertsen was appointed in 1968 by Irwin Hoffman, the orchestra’s acting music director. Prior to the CSO he had served as principal trombone in the Orlando-based Florida Symphony Orchestra. An onstage retirement ceremony for both musicians has been planned for later this season.
