In Wednesday’s (10/26) Wall Street Journal, David Mermelstein writes about violinist Hilary Hahn. “A violin concerto composed for her by Jennifer Higdon earned a Pulitzer Prize in 2010, and now Ms. Hahn is immersed in something called ‘In 27 Pieces: The Hilary Hahn Encores.’ … It consists—or will, when finished—of 27 miniatures that are anywhere from 1½ to five minutes long. … For now, though, Ms. Hahn is including 13 of these short works in a program of Bach, Beethoven and Brahms that she and the pianist Valentina Lisitsa will bring to Atlanta on Thursday; to Davis, Calif., on Saturday; to Los Angeles on Tuesday; and to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Nov. 6. … At present, she has commissioned pieces from 26 composers. … To fill the final berth, Ms. Hahn has devised a contest that anyone may enter. (Details can be found on her website: www.hilaryhahn.com.) … The piece that wins the competition will be bundled with the 13 other encores that Ms. Hahn has yet to play publicly but intends to present next season.”
