In last Tuesday’s (10/25) Toronto Star, David Graham wrote, “The announcement that Ann Southam has willed $14 million to the Canadian Women’s Foundation was surprising to family members including her brother Kip as well as the executives at the foundation, which assists women in poverty and women and girls facing violence. Beverley Wybrow, president and CEO of the Canadian Women’s Foundation, said she was stunned by Southam’s generosity. ‘We found out about the donation a while ago but we waited to make the announcement ’til October, Women’s History Month.’ This gift marks the largest ever donation to a Canadian women’s organization. Since 1991, the foundation has supported more than 1,100 community programs across Canada. … Southam dedicated her life to creating music. She started composing at 15 and studied at the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of Music. She went on to compose music for modern dance companies such as the Toronto Dance Theatre. She also taught at the Conservatory. Southam was inducted into the Order of Canada last year for her contribution to music.”
