In Wednesday’s (11/2) Edmonton Journal (Alberta, Canada), Elizabeth Withey writes, “The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is, once again, on the hunt for the next Beethoven. One lucky high school student who is passionate about composing will be the ESO’s next Young Composer and receive six months’ mentorship with resident composer Robert Rival along with a $1,000 bursary for university studies. The mentorship program teaches aspiring composers, male or female, the ins and outs of writing for an orchestra, including sketching ideas, building a solid structure, writing for all instruments, creating a pro score and individual parts and understanding the rehearsal process. The winner’s original score will be premièred at Symphony Under the Sky in 2012. Students may apply online until Dec. 2. They must provide up to three sample compositions, a reference letter and an explanation of why they deserve to be the ESO’s next Young Composer.”
