In Wednesday’s (11/23) Bellingham Herald (Washington), Margaret Bikman writes, “Whatcom Symphony Orchestra announced Nov. 16 that artistic director Roger Briggs is stepping down from the orchestra’s podium in June 2012. Briggs, an acclaimed composer and pianist whose music is performed around the world, will devote more time to composing. Briggs was named artistic director in 1995 after serving two years as associate conductor. During his tenure, the orchestra has grown in size and stature, drawing enthusiastic audiences and winning national awards. ‘I’m delighted that the orchestra’s performance quality and standard are at an all-time high; high enough that we’ve been able to consistently attract world-class guest artists,’ Briggs in a news release. ‘It has been a great joy to work and grow with everyone for these past 18 years.’ Becky Elmendorf, president of the orchestra’s board of directors, credits Briggs with transforming the orchestra. … The orchestra will soon announce plans for a search committee to identify candidates to replace Briggs. ‘We’re committed to involving the entire community—our players, our patrons, and our board – in this important and exciting process,’ Elmendorf said.”
