Submission deadlines are set for this week for two separate competitions for young musicians at the Austin Symphony in Texas and at the Philadelphia Orchestra. For the Austin Symphony’s second annual competition for young composers age 18 and younger, the original deadline of November 18 has been extended to November 30; composers should submit one full original orchestral composition between 5 and 7 minutes in length; the winning composer will be notified on December 2, and the winning composition will be performed in January 2012 at local Austin area high schools by the Austin Symphony Orchestra. The Philadelphia Orchestra is accepting applications for its annual Albert M. Greenfield Student Competition through December 1 at 5 p.m.; winners will receive a cash award and the opportunity to perform as soloists with the Philadelphia Orchestra during the 2012-13 season.
