It has long been argued that music education improves student performance in other areas. The New Jersey Symphony’s Early Strings Program demonstrates that music education and training boost academic success. A new SymphonyNOW video goes behind the scenes at the program, which has provided hands-on string-instrument education to second-, third-, and fourth-graders in Newark public schools since 2000.

Also new this week: is there an inherent tension between presenting old and new works at today’s orchestras? And check out Hahn Bin, who radically redefines the image of the violin virtuoso.

SymphonyNOW is the League’s new, online-only publication that provides timely stories about orchestras on a weekly basis. You’ll find SymphonyNOW on the right-hand side of the Hub homepage.
