The New Orleans-based Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra has appointed JAMES WILLIAM BOYD director of artistic planning and production, and W. MARK McCREARY director of development. Boyd was most recently director of artistic planning and production at the Tucson Symphony Orchestra in Arizona, and served briefly as the TSO’s interim executive director during their search for a permanent executive director. In the summer of 2011 he held a seasonal position as manager of orchestral operations as Aspen Music Festival and School. A 2010 graduate of the League of American Orchestras’ Orchestra Management Fellowship Program, Boyd has enjoyed a varied career as an administrator, performer, and educator. He was CEO of the Salem (Ore.) Chamber Orchestra from 2006 to 2008, and is founding general director of Opera Western Reserve (Youngstown, Ohio), which he led from 2004 to 2006. Also a clarinetist, Boyd has performed with orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout the U.S. and in Italy, and has held adjunct faculty posts at Youngstown State University and Westminster College. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon School of Music and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in performance with a cognate in arts administration at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
McCreary, the Louisiana Philharmonic’s new director of development, comes to the orchestra following 23 years in administration at Indiana University Indianapolis. He had earlier led entrepreneurial ventures in publishing and bookselling, and has worked in the development area raising funds for buildings, laboratories, offices, programs, and artist series. A performing organist and music director, McCreary holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music as well as an artist diploma.
