The New York Youth Symphony is accepting applications for its young composer competition through January 6, 2012. The competition, initiated in 1984, commissions emerging orchestra, chamber music, and jazz composers under age 30, with three awards given annually for orchestral compositions, three awards for jazz band, and one award for chamber music. Composers must submit works previously unpublished and unperformed. Winners will be awarded a commission of $1,000 and premieres with the NYYS during the 2011-12 season, including concerts at Carnegie Hall and the Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
