The Housing Works Bookstore Cafe in New York City will be the venue for the first event in a new series called Safe Space, in which classical musicians and authors perform, read, and conduct open conversations. Tickets are priced at $12, with all sales benefiting Housing Works’ mission to fight AIDS and homelessness. Pianist Jonathan Biss and writer Adam Haslett—author of the novel Union Atlantic and the short-story collection You Are Not a Stranger Here—will perform and read at the inaugural event on January 9, 2012. The second installment in the series on February 13 will feature pianist Jeremy Denk; details will be announced later about a third event to take place in March. Housing Works is a nonprofit bookstore, café, and event space in downtown Manhattan; proceeds from every show help provide housing, healthcare, job training, and advocacy for New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS.
