The musical centerpiece of the annual New Year’s Eve Concert for Peace at New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine will be Michael Tippett’s oratorio A Child of Our Time, a choral meditation on political violence and discrimination written in response to Kristallnacht and the Holocaust. George Mathew will lead the Ubuntu-Shruti Orchestra, Dessoff Symphonic Choir, and soloists soprano Indra Thomas, mezzo Rachel Calloway, tenor Noah Stewart, and bass Soloman Howard. Also present at the event will be host Harry Smith and singer Judy Collins. The first Concert for Peace was created and conducted by Leonard Bernstein in 1983. This year’s concert is presented by Music for Life International, which stages concerts and other events to promote the awareness of international humanitarian crises and other public-interest issues in the U.S. and throughout the world.
