The Boston-based music series Emmanuel Music has announced plans for its 2012 Bach Institute this month. During the Institute, which takes place at Emmanuel Church from January 8 to 24, ten college and conservatory students will learn about and perform Bach through participation in master classes and performing in the weekly cantata at Emmanuel Church; they also will do community-engagement work and present an educational program they design for students at the Mather School in Dorchester. Among faculty for the Institute are Artistic Director Ryan Turner, Principal Guest Conductor John Harbison, and several prominent Boston-area instrumentalists who perform frequently in Emmanuel Music’s Bach concert series. Harbison will give a free talk, “How Bach Works,” on January 17, and a final Emmanuel Church concert on January 24 will feature Bach arias and a cantata. Emmanuel Music’s Bach Institute had its inaugural outing in 2011; the expanded 2012 Institute is supported in part by a grant from the Ellis L. Phillips Foundation. Visit the Emmanuel Music website for more information about the Institute.
