In Saturday’s (1/21) Daily Press (Hampton Roads, Virginia), David Nicholson writes, “For the first time, the Virginia Symphony will perform three pops concerts at the Ferguson Center for the Arts in Newport News as part of its 2012-2013 season. The news was part of the Hampton Roads orchestra’s upcoming season announcement made at this weekend’s concerts. The Ferguson also will present eight classical concerts. … In past seasons, the pops series was only presented in Norfolk’s Chrysler Hall. But Symphony President and Executive Director Eric Borenstein said in a release that ‘we’ve heard loud and clear that our friends on the Peninsula would like to see the Virginia Symphony POPS! at the Ferguson.’ … JoAnn Falletta, the orchestra’s music director and conductor, will open the classical season on Sept. 7-9 with two large orchestral pieces, Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ and Hindemith’s ‘Mathis der Maler.’ Guest pianist Jon Kimura Parker will perform Rachmaninoff’s ‘Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.’ In addition to the Ferguson Center performance, most classical concert weekends will include performances at Chrysler Hall and the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach.”
