Just about everyone who works at an American orchestra has been exposed to the ideas of El Sistema, Venezuela’s music education system—and many have been deeply inspired by its message. But implementing those ideas in the States can be a challenge. This week on SymphonyNOW, the Dallas Symphony’s Jamie Allen interviews Tricia Tunstall about her new book Changing Lives: Gustavo Dudamel, El Sistema, and the Transformative Power of Music, and how U.S. orchestras might transplant El Sistema to American soil.

Also this week: SymphonyNOW takes you behind the scenes at the Rubin Institute of Music Criticism at the Oberlin Conservatory with a first-person post by Jacob Street, the student who won first prize for his review—and you can read his review. And the League’s own Russell Jones discusses the importance of making sure your orchestra is properly insured, and what insurance company La Playa can offer in that regard.

SymphonyNOW is the League’s new, online-only publication, with timely stories about orchestras every week. You’ll find SymphonyNOW on the right-hand side of the Hub homepage.
