MICHAEL BARRETT, chief executive and general director of the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts (Katonah, N.Y.) since 2003, will step down from that post at the close of Caramoor’s 2012 Summer Festival in August. During his decade of leadership Barrett has overseen the expansion of Caramoor’s educational programs and the launch of several critically acclaimed new series. He plans to return to Caramoor in 2013 as a pianist, mentor, and conductor. Barrett is also music director of Utah’s Moab Music Festival, which he co-founded in 1992, and was a co-founder, in 1982, of the New York Festival of Song. A student of Leonard Bernstein, and his assistant conductor from 1985 to 1990, Barrett is currently artistic advisor to the Estate of Leonard Bernstein. Born in Guam and raised in California, he holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and received further training at the University of Hartford’s Hartt School of Music.
