The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s 2012-13 season will feature creative directors Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Branford Marsalis, and Jennifer Higdon, as the orchestra continues its music-director search, following the end of Paavo Järvi’s ten-year tenure as music director in spring 2011. Each creative director will be in residence for two weeks with the orchestra and will participate in educational and community-engagement activities. De Burgos will lead works to include Respighi’s Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome, Falla’s music from El amor brujo and Nights in the Gardens of Spain; plus Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, featuring mezzo Stephanie Blythe, the Cincinnati Boy Choir, and the women of the May Festival Chorus. Saxophonist Branford Marsalis will perform as soloist in Jacob Ter Veldhuis’s Tallahatchie Concerto with the orchestra, in a program that also includes Barber’s Night Flight, Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kijé Suite, and Scriabin’s Symphony No. 4 (“Poem of Ecstasy”). Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto will be featured on a November program with Ravel’s Alborada del gracioso, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol, and Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini. In March the CSO will perform Higdon’s Concerto for Orchestra, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 (“Emperor”), with soloist André Watts, and a commissioned world premiere by Zhou Tian. In January 2013, Music Director Laureate Paavo Järvi returns to lead Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 and Lutoslawski’s Piano Concerto, with soloist Stewart Goodyear.
