What makes an orchestra? Apparently not the name, as demonstrated by the New York-based Asphalt Orchestra, more “guerilla” brass band than classical ensemble. But they sure pack a punch. A new video this week on SymphonyNOW shows off their recent “flash mob”-esque performance at the Met Museum’s Charles Engelhard Court to help inaugurate the museum’s New American Wing.

Also this week, Chester Lane looks at three new books that follow the careers of Carlos Kleiber, Charles Munch, and Chicago Symphony Orchestra Music Director Riccardo Muti. And multi-platinum award-winning hip-hop producer Drumma Boy pays tribute to his classical roots.

SymphonyNOW is the League’s new, online-only publication, with timely stories about orchestras every week. You’ll find SymphonyNOW on the right-hand side of the Hub homepage.
