The Tucson Symphony Orchestra’s upcoming “Arizona Centennial Celebration” will feature the world premiere of Desert Solitude, a suite for Native American flute and orchestra by James DeMars. R. Carlos Nakai, of Navajo-Ute heritage, will serve as soloist in the three-movement work, to be performed on February 10 and 12 in Tucson Music Hall on a program led by Music Director George Hanson celebrating the 100th anniversary of Arizona statehood. Also featured on the program will be Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, narrated by former Tucson Mayor Robert Walkup; Márquez’s Danzón No. 2, also featuring the University of Arizona Dance Ensemble; and Grofé’s Grand Canyon Suite, accompanied by images of the Grand Canyon by photochoreographer James Westwater.
