Violinist/violist IDA KAVAFIAN and baritone SANFORD SYLVAN have been named to the college music faculty of The Juilliard School, effective in fall 2012. Kavafian also serves on the Curtis Institute of Music and Bard College Conservatory faculties, and will retain both positions. In addition to her active career as a soloist, she is a longtime member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Former violinist in the Beaux Arts Trio, she has performed frequently with her sister, violinist Ani Kavafian, and as guest violist with the Orion, American, and Shanghai string quartets. For 26 years Kavafian has been artistic director of New Mexico’s Music from Angel Fire festival. Sylvan has performed as baritone soloist with many leading orchestras, collaborating with such conductors as Pierre Boulez, Herbert Blomstedt, Christoph von Dohnányi, Christopher Hogwood, James Levine, Roger Norrington, Simon Rattle, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. His opera credits include Glyndebourne, the San Francisco Opera, New York City Opera, and La Monnaie in Brussels. In addition to his Juilliard post he will continue as a member of the voice faculty at McGill University in Montreal.
