In Saturday’s (2/25) Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Elaine Schmidt writes, “The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra announced its 2012-’13 season this week, unveiling a year of concerts that balances great traditional works with masterpieces by latter-day composers such as Bernstein, Berio and Bartok. The coming season ranges from the 300-year-old sounds of an all-baroque evening to John Adams’ haunting ‘On the Transmigration of Souls,’ written in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. MSO music director Edo de Waart, who spoke recently about the season, is a firm believer in programming and conducting music for which he has strong feelings. Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4, which he will conduct here next January, is a good example. … Among the highlights of the season is the repeat of a hit from the MSO’s 2009-’10 season, Bartok’s opera ‘Bluebeard’s Castle,’ complete with the vibrant glass pieces that artist Dale Chihuly designed for the piece. The sold-out 2009 performances were just the second time the opera had performed with the Chihuly set. The orchestra will also accompany the film version of Bernstein’s ‘West Side Story’ that was restored for the film’s 50th anniversary.”
