In Saturday’s (2/25) Democrat and Chronicle (Rochester, New York), Stuart Low writes, “For its 90th anniversary season, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra will reaffirm its cordial relations with women composers and the Eastman School of Music. And it’ll toast a few other musicians’ anniversaries in style. ‘My main ambition is to continue building what I started in my first season,’ says RPO music director Arild Remmereit, who arrived in Rochester last fall. ‘There will be a continued emphasis on women composers. And Eastman students will perform in Amy Beach’s Piano Concerto and Puccini’s (comic opera) Gianni Schicchi.’ Beach is the lavishly gifted Bostonian whose Gaelic Symphony opened this season. The orchestra also will give the world premiere of a work by Japanese-born composer Karen Tanaka. … New commissioned works by Eastman School of Music dean Douglas Lowry and RPO principal pops conductor Jeff Tyzik should help make the 2012-2013 lineup exciting for fans of contemporary music. … The RPO will celebrate its own 90th birthday by playing music associated with its very first season. Rochester composer Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 1, ‘Nordic’ (written in 1922) will share a program with Tam o’Shanter by Eugene Goosens, the RPO’s first music director.”
