The Gürzenich Orchestra (Cologne, Germany) has named American conductor JAMES GAFFIGAN to the newly created post of principal guest conductor, effective with the 2012-13 season. In addition to conducting concerts he will lead the orchestra in CD recording projects and in productions presented by the city’s Oper Köln. Gaffigan is chief conductor of Switzerland’s Lucerne Symphony and principal guest conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. Previous posts include associate conductor, San Francisco Symphony (2006-09) and assistant conductor, Cleveland Orchestra (2003-06). A native of New York, Gaffigan has guest conducted numerous major orchestras in the U.S. as well as in Europe, and makes his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic on March 30, 2012.
